My husband and I moved into our first home as 26 year old newlyweds. We brought all three of our children home to it. I refer to it as “the house that built me”. No, it’s not the home I lived in as a child. It’s the house I learned to become a wife, a mother, an adult in. Where the real growth happens inside yourself.
We now live in our dream home, but hanging on our wall is a sketch of our first home to always remember its importance.
Our home now is under renovation. We are renovating for Phase Two of life – watching my children grow into little people, and then adults in it. When you’re newly turned 40 you live differently. After 15 years of marriage we have goals for our family. I want this new remodel to not only represent us as a family, but nurture it. Being House Proud is important.
Why am I sharing this? Because we are lucky. But not all are, and we can help. I’ve helped built Habitat for Humanity houses in the past, but this spring YOU can help IN A NEW WAY for this unreal company and cause!
Home is the Key
Home is the Key is Habitat for Humanity’s national cause that started in 2017 in effort to spread the word the nation’s rising affordable housing crisis and generate support for how an affordable home can help make life better for families and individuals.
It’s an effort Chicos FAS graciously supports to empower women. Women helped build this house, and Krushetta, the new homeowner, built it with her family. She, too, understands that a home is more than just four walls and some cement.
Habitat for Humanity Facts
One in six families in US use half or more of their income for housing. This means less $ for nutritional food or healthcare.
Habitat homes are built in local communities across all 50 states and 70+ countries around the world. Every 17 seconds Habitat is giving another family a chance to make their living conditions better.
Habitat Owners don’t get a free house – they earn it through sweat equity building it, and a decent mortgage. Additionally, they receive financial education and training to help equip them to succeed.
There is less than 2% foreclosure rate on Habitat owners -wow!
Virtually nowhere in the U.S. can a full-time employee earning minimum wage afford a one-bedroom apartment. Even two such jobs won’t rent a two-bedroom apartment in 34 states and the District of Columbia.

Thank you to Habitat for Humanity’s Home is the Key campaign and its corporate partners for sponsoring this post. I signed up to be a part of this campaign because I believe so strongly in their purpose, and what they stand for. Ensuring everyone has a safe home is so important, and I couldn’t be more excited to partner with this organization to spread the word this spring.
