Hey there, holiday rockstars! 🎄 Are you ready to deck the halls but feeling stumped when it comes to your Christmas tree game? Fear not! Whether you’re for the ease of pre-lit sparkle or you’re all about DIY brilliance, I’ve got the festive scoop. Once you’re through, you’ll be ready to make that tree decision like the holiday hero you were born to be!
The twinkling dilemma begins! Pre-lit trees are like that charming friend who arrives at the party ready to dazzle, no prep needed. You won’t be wrestling with tangled light strands from Christmases past or hunting for that one rogue bulb that’s decided to take a holiday of its own.
But hey, maybe you’re the type who looks forward to the annual lighting ceremony. In that case, stringing up the lights yourself could be your ticket to Christmas cheer.
Whether you’re Team Pre-Lit or Team DIY, both these cheerful champs require a little TLC when the season ends.
Rule of thumb: Pre-lit trees are getting better every year and should last for several years. Be sure to store carefully, and follow any directions from the manufacturer about how hot of an attic your lit-tree can handle. Use a tree bag to keep things gently stored and be sure not to stack anything heavy on the bag while stored. Storing upright is generally preferred!
White it’s best to store in an air-conditioned space, I do a mix. I do have some trees stored in my attic and they’ve fared just as well!
You might be tempted to keep your lights on while storing. Good news! For the DIY decorated trees, you can usually get away with this (as long as you’re careful about it). Just make sure those lights are LED to avoid damage, and cover the tree to protect it from dust.

This is a tough one because I put up nine trees (you read that right!) I have a mix of both pre-lit and not. I do have to admit that I’m partial to pre-lit only because I put up so many and I just lose my mind lighting that many trees!
Be sure to get inspired with all of the trees I’ve decorated over the years!
I’ve found that my pre-lit artificial trees have lasted on average five years before a few areas fizzle out. But that’s a pretty solid amount of time for them to hold up!
But! If I was putting up just one tree and I didn’t want to replace a tree after a few years, then go for the non-lit one.
No matter which path you’re sleighing, finding the right tree is key. I only buy my artificial trees from King of Christmas! I actually did all of their tree styling and product photography – so I’ve had my hands on every single one of their trees for years. I can attest to their quality and design!
Be sure to read this post about how to pick the perfect artificial tree. Here are a few I think have great quality and durability.
Remember, loves, the tree you choose is about creating memories and crafting that cozy, holiday vibe that says ‘home’. ✨
