Our staircase is really tall – at at a very steep angle. In the past I just haven’t been happy with how the staircase banister garland turned out. Learning scale is still challenging! It seemed like it took forever to learn how to attach garland to staircase railing. I tried everything till I figured out the secret. I use garland ties for banister to hang my Frontgate Christmas garland and garland grabbers for staircase. My Christmas banister garland has never looked better! I used to dread hanging garland on staircase banisters but now, I’m kinda becoming a pro at it. I even got a little fancy and began using cordless garland with lights and it brightens up the banister garland making it magical!
This year I realized I just didn’t have enough garland to create the right scale, so i doubled it. Each area is actualloy two pieces of garland to create a heavier swag. Much better!
You need two feet of garland for every foot of the handrail.
How to Attach Garland to Staircase Railing
If you have a staircase, the inner Christmas nerd in me screams you HAVE to decorate it. Not many people hang Christmas garland on their staircase. It really gives your home that Hallmark magical look you won’t find in nearly any home. Why? Most people don’t know how to do it! I’m going to show you the tips and tricks I learned (the hard way) to help you make your home dazzling this Christmas.
Hanging Garland on Staircase Banisters
I use these garland ties to attach the garland to my banister. They won’t scratch anything and work beautifully! They can hold the heaviest of garland. I use one at the top and the bottom. They last forever – I’ve had mine for ten years!

Using Garland Ties for Banister
It can be frustrating to get your banister garland to stay put! That’s been my biggest challenge. I’ve learned that using garland ties for banister is a life saver! Either ties or some sort of garland grabbers for staircase have worked best for me. If it falls while your tying, take a deep breath and give it a go again. Recruit the kids if you need it to hold your Christmas banister garland in place until you can get it fully secured with the ties.
Stay Merry!
Christmas Banister Garland – Cordless Garland with Lights
Using cordless garland with lights, I mean you’ve probably guessed, just makes your life easier! You’re already wrestling with the garland trying to hide the ties, the last thing you need to is deal with hiding and plugging a cord. Cordless lights with lights give you freedom from the plug in and allows hanging garland on staircase without a trip hazard!
