If you’re anything like me, the day you turned 40 years old, your skin started to change. What the what?!?! Why and how is this happening? My skin became dry and I couldn’t get a hold of it. As a long time lover of Tretinoin (read that full blog post here) I didn’t want to give up the miracle aging cream, but I needed to get my skin to adjust to the ever-growing dry skin change that popped up! Because of my dry skin, I would moisturize but kept wondering why is my skin so dry even when I moisturize? I’ve tried a lot of products and these are my favorite face lotion & moisturizer options including exfoliating products, cleaners, daily moisturizers, and the best face night cream. If you’re looking for an instant face lift cream, then some of these may be for you!
Here’s what I did to start getting my dry skin under control – note everyone’s skin is different, this is just what has worked for me!
If you’re like me and wondering, why is my skin so dry even when I moisturize, chances are you’re skipping a step or overdoing another. Over cleansing is absolutely something you shouldn’t do – and you also need to be sure you’re using the right cleanser. I’m not a fan of any face cleanser that lathers. They strip oils and make your skin squeaky clean – which isn’t a good thing! Using a moisturizing makeup remover, and a soft and gentle cleanser will set your skin up to be soft, clean and prepped to add your face lotion & moisturizer.
I swear by a combination of using Clinique Take the Day Off cleansing balm to remove my makeup, followed up by Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. Both do a beautiful job and really cleaning your skin, moisturizing it and prepping your skin to absorb that beautiful moisturizer you’re about to apply! If your skin feels squeaky after you clean it, that’s not good! You’re stripping the oils!
I exfoliate once a week with an exfoliating product, twice if my skin is feeling really good. But rarely more than that. I rotate between two exfoliating products: Pixi Glow Tonic and Dermalogica Microfoliant Exfoliator.
Also, I use a washcloth every night to remove my makeup. I start with the Clinique Take the Day Off cleansing balm (a very moisturizing makeup remover) and use a warm washcloth to remove the makeup. Then I follow up with a second cleanse using the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser (not the face wash – I find that too harsh on my skin.) The washcloth adds a gentle exfoliator for everyday use.
Makeup won’t go on well on dry skin — blegh. I rotate between a few different face lotion & moisturizer products to keep my skin plump. Some are drugstore offerings, some are majorly expensive. I think all are really good, and worth trying one-by-one to see what works for you.
Cost-Effective Recommendation: The Ordinary Buffet Serum. This is a really cost-effective serum that will give you lots and lots of good ingredients and start to defeat that dry skin. Give it a good amount of time to soak in tho — sometimes this is best used at night, but you may want to hit that dry skin hard and use it in the AM for awhile!
Dr. Jart+ Ceramindin Cream – a really heavy cream designed to hit that dry area hard. It really worked for me to get things back in control!
Bobbi Brown Face Base – this is a goodie. It smells delicious and makes for a beautiful moisturizing cream underneath your makeup. I recently had my makeup done for TV and she used it, so I’m not the only one! Pro’s use it, too!
Luxury Moisturizer: SkinMedia Ha5 – read full review here. This product costs a fortune, but it adds massive moisture and is a great daily product that acts as an instant face lift cream!
Why is my skin so dry even when I moisturize? Hopefully, if you’ve implemented steps one and two, you’re on your way to that evening soak which allows your skin to rest and renew. Here are what I think are the best face night cream options:
Chances are you’re not drinking enough water. I’m not here to tell you to cut wine (you already know that’s not helping, but we are in our 40s +++ and we aren’t giving up the wine! So balance it by drinking extra water! Your skin is clearly thirsty. Here are some great water jugs to help you keep track of how much water you’re drinking every day!
Try these tips out for one month and you should stop wondering why is my skin so dry even when I moisturize! Give your skin some time to adjust so baby it for several weeks. I think you’ll be pleased! Let me know how it goes!
